It’s no secret we’re big Star Trek fans here at Geek Decor. And it’s no secret that Our Nerd Home is really, really good. It’s a fantastic site.
So when we found this DIY Star Trek Hand, we had to post about it. And may try it later. Like in an hour…
Simply get some alginate from Amazon, use a milk jug to mix it by hand, and stick your hand in a homemade mold. The one used here was made out of cardboard. Then, the hard part: pour an inch of alginate in the box, keep your hand in there, doing the Vulcan symbol of “live long and prosper,” and then pour the rest of the alginate on top. After 10 minutes, you can finally pull your hand out.
So, whatever you do, don’t stick the person with little patience, and an inability to sit still, on the task. Bad idea.
Once that’s done, fill the negative hand mold space with plaster of paris, let that dry overnight, and cut the plaster hand out. Be SUPER careful doing this, because you can ruin it in this part. Once that’s done, sand the wrist, so it’s flat, and paint it any color you’d like. Finally, glue it to a thin piece of stained scrap wood and voilà!
Sounds easy enough, right? If you’re like most of us and don’t have any alginate, or plaster of paris, you’re not alone. Hit up your local arts and crafts store and give it a whirl!
